Wondering who and what GAIA is all about?
GAIA (Global AIDS Interfaith Alliance)
is a non-profit, non-governmental organization which was founded in June 2000 in response to the global HIV and AIDS catastrophe.
GAIA is presently at work in Malawi, a small country in central Africa. In Malawi 80,000 people die of AIDS-related illnesses each year leaving well over 500,000 children alone and orphaned.
What makes GAIA unique?
We have established relationships with grass roots, village-level entities and can therefore rely on the local village women to identify and address the needs of those living with AIDS and create local strategies to sustain their services.
What exactly is GAIA doing?
GAIA has numerous programs which work with local people to develop educational strategies for prevention of HIV and AIDS, care for people with AIDS-related diseases, de-stigmatization of ill persons, breaking down social denial, networking for improved services, nutrition enhancement, encouragement to be tested, counseling and treatment for STDs, support to girls and women for greater personal agency, defining contextually appropriate roles for religious organizations, and economic self sufficiency for orphans.
